The coronary arteries which carries the blood becomes narrower over a period of time due to the formation of a substance called plaque on the interior walls.

As a result over the period of time, the blood flows become difficult in the afterties.

This results in a person suffering from a heart attack.

A patient is referred for Angioplasty to remove the blood clots in the arteries.

Which happens by the process of stent implantation in the arteries.

Earlier, metal stents were most preferable. But over due course of time, metal stents are replaced with different kinds of stents.

In a nutshell, drug-eluting stents are preferable over BMS for the majority of patients undergoing angioplasty and stent placement.

DES can prevent blocage recurrence to a larger extent vs. BMS. Also, the more recent 3rd generation of DES is at least as safe as BMS.

Hence, as of present knowledge, the 3rd generation of Drug-Eluting Stents can be termed excellent for angioplasty, without any preference for a particular brand.

All the current generation stents are similar with reference to alloy composition, the extent of flexibility and trackability, and similar drugs as well as polymer composition to yield the drug coating.

They are also similar in terms of their clinical outcomes.

However, DES is less preferred for patients who have bleeding problems or those who will need surgery in near future.

Also, the biodegradable or dissolvable stents are not yet widely recommended as compared to the 3rd generation DES due to lack of long-term efficacy and safety data.
